My wife and I love to spend long days outdoors. Sun is great in moderation but too much UV radiation can lead to sunburn. I created ShadeMap so we could better choose the times and locations we recreate in.

Below is our favorite sun protection gear. Some of the links contain affiliate codes so a portion of your purchase goes to keeping ShadeMap running and improving our data over time.

Outdoor Research Astroman Hoodie

We live in these hoodies during sunny days. In fact, we refer to ourselves as Astropeople! These hoodies are lightweight and loose fitting for better ventilation. The large chest zipper allows for even more venting. The fabric dries quickly so you can dip them in a stream and wear them wet for some evaporative cooling. Plus the hood fits easily over a helmet if you're climbing or spring skiing.

Goodr Sunglasses

We drop, scratch and lose our sunglasses A LOT. For that reason we like the price point of Goodr sunglasses. They block the UV rays but won't break the bank. Plus they're lightweight and come in a plethora of colors.

REI On the Trail Cap

This hat is stretchy and ventilates well. It hugs your head perfectly thanks to a bungee closure. You can wash it in a machine without deforming it and it doesn't have a top button so it's comfortable under a helmet as well. Finally, you can flip the brim up for better visiblity while climbing.

Merino Wool Buff

I'm not a big fan of sunscreen, especially on overnight trips. The creams leave my skin feeling oily and get into my eyes. Instead, I use a merino wool buff to cover my face. The wool keeps my skin cooler than polyester or nylon and it doubles as a scarf when the weather turns cold at night.
